Hello, I’m Piet!
I’m an aspiring film composer recently graduated with a degree in Composition and Experimental Sound Practices from the California Institute of the Arts.
My training and background draws me toward mood, setting, and light, bridging the worlds of sound and image.
I'm currently seeking a position that will allow me to explore these ideas in film and television.
About me
I’m originally from Los Angeles, but was raised in Marin County, California. I come from a family of architects, designers, engineers, writers and educators, who have inspired in me the value of design and curiosity. I’m interested in all aspects of design composition: design of a photographic image, design of physical objects, design of a piece of music or score.
I enjoy delving deeply into an idea or concept in order to implement my design. I've learned the value of developing and exploring a big idea by focusing on the smaller details, researching and fully immersing myself in a project to realize my concept.
During high school I hand-built the acoustic guitar pictured left - I didn’t have a large amount of skill in woodworking so I researched the process and techniques luthiers use in their craft and implemented my research into the project.
The website you are viewing is also a hand-built effort that started with research and then the application of the information I gleaned into a design project. I had no experience with web design or coding prior to determining to design and implement my site. Please excuse any imperfections! It's an ongoing project.
/music
Of music compositions I’ve studied, my favorites evoke emotion, inspire, motivate, uplift, and help tell a story. CalArts taught me the critical role music plays in motion picture production, including the worlds of film, television, and gaming. On this site I’ve included examples of my composition focusing on cinematic electronic and orchestral concepts, and ideas in experimental sound.

/film scoring exercises
I’m interested in the impact music provides to the audience’s experience and music’s unique characteristics that contribute to finished content. I’ve included examples from my work at CalArts focusing on scoring ideas that explore characteristics of, among other things, setting, movement, emotion, and impact.
(Currently Incomplete) An original rescore of a scene from the film Ratatouille (2007).
An original rescore of a trailer for the videogame Hitman 2.
A project for a class called Aesthetics of Sound and Image. The aim was to select a single image and create three different sound spaces to accompany it, each being different in tone while remaining effective with the visual.

/photography
I enjoy using my camera to compose and carry it with me to capture everyday moments that I find visually interesting in light and color, or tell a story. I look for balance (or a lack thereof), compelling shapes and patterns, and mood. Though I often photograph landscapes, I’m also drawn toward portraiture as well, including wedding photography, some of which can be viewed here.
